Miquamicut Beach Condos
One of the largest renovation projects on the eastern section of Misquamicut Beach is about to begin with the conversion of the
Sea-view Apartments into 16 luxury time-share condominiums with an adjoining indoor pool and health spa.
Barbara Stillman, who owns seven motels at Misquamicut, purchased the Seaview Apartments Jan. 30 from Charles and Elias Trefes for
$880,000.
The property includes four buildings, three of which are along the beachfront and one that is along Atlantic Avenue.
Stillman said she and her crew will begin a complete renovation of all the buildings soon with the expectation of marketing the properties by
June.
One of the buildings will be modified to add four lofts, thus increasing the height of the building to the 35-foot maximum allowed by zoning
at the beach.
Stillman's renovations will include reducing the number of bedrooms in most of the units from three to two.
The Trefes family has owned the parcel and two adjoining properties that together have been known as the Atlantic Beach Casino Resort since
1921.
The Trefes brothers, who took over the property from their parents in 1972, will retain ownership of the adjoining Windjammer Lounge and the
classic red-topped, round-roofed building that since 1900 has housed a carousel, amusements and snack bar.
Town Assessor Charles Vacca said Stillman's project is a major asset to the beach area.
"There hasn't been any real renovations at that end of the beach in probably the last 20 years," Vacca said.
The Atlantic Beach Casino is east of Misquamicut State Beach. Motels and restaurants on the west side of the state beach are in
considerably better shape than those on the east side.
Stillman's property abuts a large vacant parcel formerly owned by James Armenakes, who is awaiting trial in Providence on federal drug
trafficking charges following last September's undercover sting operation that resulted in his arrest by local and state police and FBI
agents.
Armenakes' properties have been placed in permanent receivership by a Superior Court Judge.
Stillman, a native of Misquamicut, has purchased several derelict beach motels over the years and renovated them into family-oriented
inns and motels.
