Pawcatuck is a village located in the town of Stonington in the southeastern part of
Connecticut.
The Pawcatuck River separates Westerly from Pawcatuck but both towns have always been
involved with each other.

The first business in Pawcatuck was a trading post on the Pawcatuck River built by Thomas Stanton in
1661.
Shortly thereafter a grist mill and later a sawmill was erected on the west bank of the river.
The oldest standing house in Stonington is the Stanton-Davis Homestead in Lower Pawcatuck built in
1680.
Pawcatuck has seen some rough times over the years.
Once the home of numerous textile mills, military suppliers, printing houses and other manufacturers, the neighborhood has seen its share of
business consolidations, plant closings and job losses.
The community which borders the beautiful Pawcatuck River, has never lost its spirit or sense of place.
In 2004, the community applied for a grant to CEDF to fund a neighborhood economic development process.

Behind the proposal was the desire to investigate the reuse of numerous old industrial plants along the riverfront.
One notable complex is ten acres, right on the river, in the middle of the neighborhood.
Closer to downtown are the remnants of a vital business district where numerous commercial buildings now are empty.
Working with the town’s economic development commission, the PRO neighborhood council, and CEDF, the neighborhood wished to look at the economic
potential of the historic mills and bring back community assets (such as the river) that could revive the the image and economic health of the
neighborhood.
The final plan was presented by the consultants in April with recommendations for new configuration of the industrial sites to make them
better suited for new smaller tenants, new housing development on vacant land, and in some of the old mills, and a new emphasis to link the
downtown area to the positive investments taking place in Westerly
