Shelter Harbor Rhode Island

Shelter Harbor is a 200 acre waterfront community with beautiful views of Quonochontaug
Pond (a three mile salt pond with breachway access to the ocean).
Shelter Harbor is a private community and offers free tennis, docking/launching facilities, and
lifeguarded swimming at community's private dock area and at its private ocean beach locations.

A navigable breachway allows boat access to Block Island Sound.
Sailors and powerboaters will find themselves within easy reach of Newport, Block Island, Montauk, Fishers
Island, Watch Hill, and Stonington/Mystic.
As an added convenience, there is the full service Shelter Harbor Inn at the entrance
of the community which is located between Watch Hill and Newport.

The prestigious Shelter
Harbor Golf Club is directly across from the community.
The Shelter Harbor Inn is located on a farm dating back to the early 1800's.
The original farmhouse, after numerous additions, has become the focal point of the Inn while
the surrounding 200 acres of farmland has become the community of Shelter Harbor.
Shelter Harbor is a 200 acre+ community on the Quonochontaug Pond that is a salt water buffer
from the Atlantic Ocean.
The property was originally a farm back in 1810 and today it is the Shelter Harbor
Inn.

The Shelter Harbor Inn was first established in 1911 when Dr. Franklin Lawson from New York City purchased
the property in order to establish a community for musicians.
Dr. Lawson, a noted voice teacher, encouraged other musicians to visit the Inn and to purchase lots in the
newly established community called "Music Colony."
It would become an ideal place for musicians and their families to relax between the summer performing season
in Newport and winter in New York City.
By the early 1920's, Music Colony had grown to include many non-musicians and the community changed its named
to Shelter Harbor.

The roads still retain the names of famous musicians such as Wagner, Handel, Bach, and Rossini.
While not a gated community, the community is very private.
50% of Shelter Harbor's residents live there fulltime working in Westerly or Foxwoods Casino.

The rest live and work in the greater New York, Hartford or Boston area.
The docking/launching facilitiy on the end of the main road is used primarily for canoes &
kayaks.
The Atlantic Ocean is about a half a mile fom the shoreline over the pond so a canoe is very handy to get to
the fabulous, deserted, private, Shelter Harbor beach which is under the Weekapaug Fire District's management.
Clamming in the Quonochontaug Pond is superb!
As is the wildlife viewing...

The stripe bass and bluefish run in the spring and fall and make this beach a wonderful retreat from
life.
There is a shared entrance with the Shelter Harbor Inn into the community and the Inn offers tennis
& paddle tennis memberships.
Shelter Harbor juts out into the Quonochontaug Pond so if you are on the salt pond, you can expect exquisite
sunsets and Atlantic Ocean views.

Shelter Harbor is not nearly as expensive as Weekapaug yet so close that you can enjoy their yacht Club &
tennis courts if you want.
Shelter Harbor is a great buy! Call us to go see a few properties.
Thanks for visiting....
