Weekapaug has many private roads running through it and isn't as well known as neighboring Watch Hill which is only 12 minutes south along the Atlantic Ocean.
Weekapaug was known as Noyes Beach from 1701 to 1899.
It was named after Reverend James Noyes who had purchased 300 acres of what was to become Weekapaug.
Weekapaug is a Native American word meaning "end of pond" as it is sited on the Quonochontaug Pond.
Niantics, Pequots, and Narrangansetts were found in this area before early settlers arrived.
In 1938 the Weekapaug Inn and all the houses along the beach in Weekapaug were destroyed by a hurricane.
The Inn was rebuilt in one year, but most of the private beach near the inn remains undeveloped and natural.
Two large saltwater ponds, Winnapaug Pond and Quonochontaug Pond, dominate the area; one on each side of Weekapaug, so if you enjoy the ocean
and salt water ponds Weekapaug is for you.
Both are natural, wonderful bird watching, clamming and kayaking areas.
Both breachways are lined with rock jetties and perfect for blue fish & stripe bass fishing in the Spring and Fall.
The jetty rocks are granite and came from Westerly which used to be its number one industry.
The breachway and jetties on Winnapaug were completed on May 5th, 1954.
The permanent breachway leading to Quonochontaug was completed on October 31st 1961 and is driveable only by 4-wheel drive vehicles.
Weekapaug also has the distinction of having a Phish song named after it.
It was known as Noyes Beach, named after Reverend James Noyes who purchased 300 acres of land in 1701.
1600’s Noyes Neck was known as Musquetah Neck.
A Pequot territory.
It would become known as Weekapaug in 1899.

Where Weekapaug doesn't have the shops of Watch Hill, it has many oceanfront and pondfront homes that are easily reachable by
bike.
Weekapaug grew around the Weekapaug Inn which first opened in 1899 and the quaint, oceanfront, Weekapaug Chapel in
1917.

Inn at Noyes Neck circa 1899
Summer recreation is Weekapaug life.
Fire district residents have access to two private beaches and are eligible to join the very active Weekapaug Yacht Club, Tennis
Club and Croquet Clubs.
