Westerly is located on the southern tip of Rhode
Island, bordering the southeastern corner of Connecticut.
The Town has an atmosphere of an old New England
village, and a unique history in the annals of U.S. History. The
indian name for Westerly was Misquamicut - a place for taking
salmon.
Westerly was the first town incorporated in the King's
Province on May 13, 1669, and the fifth town in the colony. On the
23rd of June 1686, the name was changed from Westerly to Haversham,
but the former name was restored in 1689. The Towns of Charlestown,
Hopkinton, and Richmond were later taken from the Town of Westerly.
Westerly Town Hall
In its early beginnings, Westerly was the frontier
town of the colony. Out of this beginning, many diversified
industries grew, but Westerly has been best known for the granite
that was once taken from its quarries for building purposes in
neighboring towns and cities, and for monuments in various parts of
the country.
Watch Hill Harbor
Westerly is also known as a vacation area. The
position of Watch Hill almost surrounded by the ocean and bay with
beautiful formation of rocks and sand beaches all contribute to its
beauty. The winds bring in the cool bracing sea air and the
temperature in the summer is rarely oppressive. Rowing, swimming,
ocean sailing, fishing, and hiking make this a favorite resort area.
Westerly's seven miles of sandy beaches are a mecca
for tourism. The seven-mile strip is composed of the Misquamicut
State beach, Westerly Town beach, public and many private beaches.
The State Beach is open year-round, while other beaches are open
from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The town of Westerly is located
just minutes away from Interstate 95 and is divided by US Route 1.
Granite Street, a five-mile portion of Route 1, runs through the
heart of Westerly. It is ranked the 10th busiest street in Rhode
Island with average daily traffic of 25,750 (both directions ).
Coastal Westerly (population 22,966), tucked into
Rhode Island's southwest corner on the Connecticut border, has been
a favorite seaside vacation spot for more than 100 years. The area
originally known as Misquamicut, located on Block Island Sound and
the Pawcatuck River, was home to Narragansett Indians prior to the
establishment of an English outpost in 1637.
Narragansett Indians grant Rhode Island to Roger
Williams
By 1661, settlers had forced the Indians across the
river and established a permanent settlement on its banks. After a
division in 1669, this site became known as the "westerly" section
and incorporated.
Westerly grew as a shipbuilding center, and U.S. naval
officer Oliver Perry built gunboats here before the War of 1812.
Westerly has had textile and other light manufacturing industries
and much of the granite used for Civil War monuments across the
county was mined here.
High Street circa 1899
Westerly has several significant historic areas and
was recognized in 2002 as one of America's "Dozen Distinctive
Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The
well-preserved 19th and 20th century commercial center, known as
Westerly Village, is the economic heart of town. Along the Pawcatuck
River, the industrial villages of Bradford, Potter Hill, and White
Rock still reflect their 19th century origins.
Passenger and freight transportation is available via
Amtrak Rail Service and the Westerly State Airport. The town of
Westerly is composed of seven villages also known as fire districts:
Westerly, Watch Hill, Dunn's Corners, Misquamicut, Bradford, Shelter
Harbor and Weekapaug. Between 1980 and 1990 Westerly experienced a
14.05% population growth. Currently, Westerly supports a population
of over 23,000, although it nearly doubles during the summer due to
the large number of vacationers and seasonal residences.
Encompassing an area of 33 square miles, the town's average
population density is projected to be 626 per square mile.
In 2002, the National Trust for Historic Preservation
named Westerly as one of the 12 Most Distinctive Destinations in the
country. The unique, well-preserved architecture downtown, coupled
with 55 historic sites, such as the Babcock-Smith House and Flying
Horse Carousel, makes it no surprise that Westerly received this
outstanding.
Babcock Smith House circa 1734
Dr. Joshua Babcock was Westerly's first physician as
well as a chief justice of Rhode Island and a major general during
the Revolutionary War. He was also a personal friend of Benjamin
Franklin, who supposedly supplied the lightning rods for the house's
gambrel roof. This two-story Georgian-styled wooden home was built
in 1734 and contains six fireplaces which feed into one large main
chimney. Orlando Smith, a later owner of the house, discovered
granite on the property in 1846, which led to Westerly becoming one
of the country's leading granite centers. In 1972 the 124 Granite
Street building was added to the National Register of Historic
Places. 401-596-5704
Westerly marks the western edge of Rhode Island.
Travel too far or make an uncautious turn and you could fall of the
edge of the state into Pawcatuck, CT.
The city prides itself on its granite mining heritage
and is a haven for antique shopping, historians, and people looking
for great food and theater.
Granite Theater Westerly
The Granite Theatre is a handsomely restored Greek
Revival Church that sits at the foot of Granite Street in downtown
Westerly, Rhode Island. Year round, the Granite Theatre will stage
various forms of entertainment including Broadway plays, children's
plays, lecture programs, cabaret acts, and more.
One Granite Street, Westerly, RI 02891 (401) 596-2341
You should also keep a slot on your schedule for
Westerly's Summer Pops concert in June and their First Night
celebrations at New Year's. Their excellent red-tile-roofed library
has a historical document section that would tempt any history buff.
South from downtown Westerly on 1A will take you
toward the summertime favorite, Watch Hill, with its beaches, flying
horses carrousel (they call it a "merry-go-round") historic homes,
and Watch Hill Lighthouse.
A well-maintained railway station sits at the north
end of downtown and a small airport is east of town for private
planes. Route 1 (Post Road) travels through the city, but by road,
the easist path is from Exit 92 from I-95 in Connecticut, which will
take you to Route 1 just west of the state line. Turn left and cross
the river to get to downtown Westerly.
Many are attracted to the pristine shoreline, with its
unspoiled dunes, salt ponds and even islands. Others prefer the
rural serenity of inland South County where you can still see dairy
cows and horses grazing.
Step into Downtown Westerly and step back to a time
where a main street was actually a "Main Street."
Christ Church
Memorial Library
Numerous Westerly businesses call downtown home, and
whether you're looking for fashionable clothing for a night out on
the town, that hard to find piece to complete your antique
collection, or a simple haircut, Downtown Westerly is the place to
look.
The heart of the downtown area is Wilcox Park, an 18
acre Victorian Strolling Park that is home to beautiful gardens,
statuary, and arboretum.
Wilcox Park is the home to many Westerly and Chamber
of Commerce events including the Virtu Art Festival, The Summer Pops
and The Colonial Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park.
Originally designed by Warren Manning, this 18-acre
park remains true to its Victorian beginning in 1898. Its quiet
pathways are graced by native and exotic trees, shrubs and flowers.
A Tree Walk, produced by park staff and available at the Westerly
Public Library, details over 35 species and their locations. The
park is host to Colonial Theatre's Shakespeare-in-the-Park and the
Chorus of Westerly's Summer Pops. Located behind the Westerly Public
Library, the park has been on the National Register of Historic
Places.

Hill Harbor, this small park with six benches offers a great
opportunity to stroll or sit and observe the harbor activity. The
municipal dock is also available for picking up or dropping off
boaters. Limited parking is available.

lighthouse, built in 1858 on the north side of the east entrance to
Fisher's Island Sound, are open daily. The museum is open Tuesday
and Thursday, 1 to 3pm.
Wequetequock Cove visible from Route 1 in Pawcatuck,
this cove is a congregated feeding area for hundreds of mute swans
September through January.
Westerly Armory: Located on Dixon Street &
Railroad Avenue, this historic building is undergoing extensive
renovation to restore the building for the people of the community
to use for events, meetings, sports events, and to honor the social
and military history of the Westerly-Pawcatuck area. It is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
Westerly Railroad Station: Built in 1912, the station
is an elegant, Spanish Colonial Revival structure with stucco walls
and hipped, terra cotta tile roof. It was completely restored in
1998 and stands majestically as a beautiful example of downtown's
revitalization and rich history. The station is served by Amtrak
trains.
Schools
Many new residents are drawn to the state because of
the quality of our schools. Boasting high test scores and
progressive thinking, South County schools share a reputation for
being among the best in the state.
Westerly administrators speak of a "zero failure
policy," of refusing to "give up on any student," and of providing
students with "meaningful supports" that are "child-focused." For
example, recognizing the need for integrating services within the
school setting for students with a variety of needs, Westerly High
School developed the Westerly Integrated Social Services Program
(WISSP). Located in the school building and directed by a school
psychologist, WISSP coordinates school services and community
resources in a place accessible to students and their families to
meet any social or emotional needs they might have. Its vision is
"to promote all students' success in school and enhance the quality
of life for all families in the community" (WISSP Pamphlet, 1997).
